I chose Dunn Heating & Cooling because of their excellent Google reviews and reputation. Unfortunately, my experience was extremely disappointing and has seriously affected my trust in the company.
From the very beginning, I was uncomfortable with their process. I was told that I had to provide my credit card number over the phone before they would even send a technician. There was no secure process offered to enter the information without it being recorded. I had to insist that the agent stop recording before giving my card details. This is not a process I would expect from an established company.
I was quoted $169 + HST for the service visit, but was not told in advance about an additional $20 fuel surcharge. When I called to question this after the tech visit , Aqela from customer service explained that it was because of increased gas prices. My concern is simple: customers should be told about additional charges before the service is performed.
The biggest issue, however, was the technician’s diagnosis.
Technician Henrik L inspected my system and told me that the AC motor needed to be replaced. He attempted to change the capacitor, which did not resolve the issue, and then quoted approximately $1,550 + tax for the motor repair.
He also told me that the heating coil inside the furnace was rusted and that he recommends AC and the furnace needed to be replaced. The asked him for a quote right away
I was then told that a technician could not provide a replacement quote and that a Home Comfort Advisor would need to make a separate visit. I arranged the appointment for the weekend because I was told I needed to be present.
The Home Comfort Advisor inspected everything, took photographs and quoted approximately:
• $11,000 for builder-grade furnace + AC replacement
• $11,800 for furnace + heat pump
At this point, I decided to get a second opinion before spending thousands of dollars.
Thankfully, I did.
Another HVAC company came out, diagnosed the issue within minutes and found that the actual problem was a burnt wire going to the AC. They repaired it for approximately $100 — and the AC immediately started working.
The motor was fine. It did not need to be replaced.
What is even more concerning is that the second HVAC company told me that even if the motor had actually needed replacement, they would have replaced the motor, including labour, for approximately $550 — compared with the $1,550 + tax quoted by Dunn.
So I went from being told I potentially needed a $1,550 motor repair and ultimately an $11,000–$11,800 equipment replacement, to having the actual problem fixed for approximately $100.
That is an enormous difference.
I understand that HVAC troubleshooting can sometimes be complicated and that diagnoses can differ. But when a simple burnt wire is missed and a homeowner is instead presented with a costly motor repair and then a five-figure replacement proposal, I find that extremely concerning.
I am very disappointed with the level of troubleshooting, transparency and professionalism I experienced from Dunn Heating & Cooling. I expected much better from a company with such an established reputation.
My AC is now working perfectly, thanks to the second HVAC company.
I am requesting a full refund of the diagnostic/service visit and associated charges, because the assessment I paid for was not accurate.
I would strongly advise homeowners to get a second opinion before approving any expensive repair or replacement recommended by this company.
If Dunn does not resolve this appropriately, I will be escalating my complaint to the BBB and other appropriate consumer-protection channels.
I will not be using Dunn Heating & Cooling again, and based on this experience, I cannot recommend them to other homeowners.

I was extremely pleased that Dunn has proactively hired young students to be trained and experience the Heating cooling industry. They certainly learned a lot with the removal of our aged equipment and installation of our new Heat pump.
I switched to Dunn from another company/supplier and I am extremely happy I did . So far they’ve been very professional and attentive to my concerns. Today (June 25, 2026) we had Cory come to do maintenance on our air conditioning. He was exceptional! Wonderfully explained each step as he went along. Great customer service and very thoughtful to put the boot coverings on each time he entered the step. It was such a pleasure to meet him. Thank you Cory for all your hard work today!
Even just dropping the cheque off and the friendly conversation with the folks in the office made the experience great. We did the heat pump, furnace and tank less water.
